    Security Aware Virtual Base Station Placement in 5G Cloud Radio Access Networks

In fifth generation (5G) cloud radio access networks (C-RAN), baseband processing of base stations (BS’s) will be processed on virtual machines called virtual BSs (VBS) in the centralized cloud architecture. The existing researches mostly focus on how to maximize resource utilization and reduce energy consumption in 5G C-RAN using VBS placement. However, security issues in the context of VBS placement within 5G C-RAN have been rarely addressed. In this paper, a security aware VBS placement (SAV) scheme within 5G C-RAN is proposed where the placement of VBSs to physical machines (PMs) considers the security levels of both the VBS and the PM. A rigorous simulation study is conducted for validating the proposed scheme, which shows a significant security improvement of 16% compared to the heuristic simulated annealing scheme (HSA).Published versio

    Saturated electric field effect at semi-insulating GaAs-metal junctions studied with a low energy positron beam

    The interfacial electric field established under different reverse bias conditions in Au and Ni on semi-insulating GaAs junctions has been studied by means of a low energy positron beam. The technique used is that of monitoring the positron drift to the interface through changes in the annihilation radiation lineshape as a function of incident positron beam energy at different reverse biases The data show a small but clear electric field drift of positrons towards the interface that increases more rapidly at low voltages (less than 50 V) which at higher biases tends towards saturation This confirmation of electric field saturation adds further weight to the picture of an electric field enhanced electron capture cross section for the ionized EL2 defect. Electric field values extracted from the data are compared with results from other techniques and suggest that enhanced electron capture is already occurring at the relatively low built-in fields (∼1 kV cm-1) found at the unbiased junction, with a rapid increase of EL2+ neutralization occurring for biases above 10 V. At still higher fields ∼10 kV cm-1 (biases>50 V), there appears to be an additional threshold for more complete EL2+ neutralization adjacent to the contact. The present study clearly demonstrates the often overlooked necessity of catering for built-in electric fields in positron diffusivity studies of III-V semiconductors where surface midgap Fermi-level pinning is common. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    DoS Attack Impact Assessment on Software Defined Networks

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an evolving network paradigm which promises greater interoperability, more innovation, flexible and effective solutions. Although SDN on the surface provides a simple framework for network programmability and monitoring, few has been said about security measures to make it resilient to hitherto security flaws in traditional network and the new threats the architecture is ushering in. One of the security weaknesses the architecture is ushering in due to separation of control and data plane is Denial of Service (DoS) attack. The main goal of this attack is to make network resources unavailable to legitimate users or introduce large delays. In this paper, the effect of DoS attack on SDN is presented using Mininet, OpenDaylight (ODL) controller and network performance testing tools such as iperf and ping. Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) flood attack is performed on a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) server and a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) server which are both connected to OpenFlow switches. The simulation results reveal a drop in network throughput from 233 Mbps to 87.4 Mbps and the introduction of large jitter between 0.003 ms and 0.789 ms during DoS attack.Published versio

    Photoinduced Dehydrogenation of Defects in Undoped a-Si:H Using Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy

    We report changes in variable-energy positron annihilation spectroscopy measurements on undoped hydrogenated amorphous silicon films after light soaking. The change, seen predominantly in the high momentum band of the annihilation radiation, is not reversed by thermal annealing. We suggest, following recent models of the Staebler-Wronski effect, that light exposure induces hydrogen trapped in vacancylikc detects to become mobile in the Si network. The observations place constraints on models of hydrogen motion fitting macroscopic Staebler-Wronski effect kinetics and may help to achieve a definitive description of metastability in a-Si:H.published_or_final_versio

    FasL expression on human nucleus pulposus cells contributes to the immune privilege of intervertebral disc by interacting with immunocytes

    The mechanisms of immune privilege in human nucleus pulposus (NP) remain unclear. Accumulating evidence indicates that Fas ligand (FasL) might play an important role in the immune privilege of the disc. We aimed for addressing the role of FasL expression in human intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) and immune privilege in terms of the interaction between NP cells and immunocytes via the FasL-Fas machinery. We collected NP specimens from 20 patients with IDD as degenerative group and 8 normal cadaveric donors as control. FasL expression was detected by qRT-PCR, western blotting and flow cytometry (FCM). We also collected macrophages and CD8(+) T cells from the peripheral blood of patients with IDD for co-cultures with NP cells. And macrophages and CD8(+) T cells were harvested for apoptosis analysis by FCM after 2 days of co-cultures. We found that FasL expression in mRNA, protein and cellular resolutions demonstrated a significant decrease in degenerative group compared with normal control (p<0.05). FCM analysis found that human NP cells with increased FasL expression resulted in significantly increased apoptosis ratio of macrophages and CD8(+) T cells. Our study demonstrated that FasL expression tends to decrease in degenerated discs and FasL plays an important role in human disc immune privilege, which might provide a novel target for the treatment strategies for IDD.published_or_final_versio

    Assessing impacts of climate change and human activities on streamflow and sediment discharge in the Ganjiang River basin (1964-2013)

National large-scale soil and water conservation controls on the Gangjiang River basin have been documented, but the effect of governance on regional watershed hydrology and how the main driving factors act have not been systematically studied yet. To do this, this study evaluated changing trends and detected transition years for both streamflow and sediment discharge using long-term historical records at seven hydrological stations in the Ganjiang River basin over the past 50 years. The double mass curve (DMC) method was used to quantify the effects of both climate change and human activities on hydrological regime shifts. The results showed that the distributions of precipitation, streamflow, and sediment discharge within a year are extremely uneven and mainly concentrated in the flood season of Jiangxi Province. None of the stations showed significant trends over time for either annual precipitation or streamflow, while the annual sediment discharge at most stations decreased significantly over time. The estimation of sediment discharge via DMC indicated that after the transition years, there were rapid reductions in sediment discharge at all hydrological stations, and the average decline degree of midstream and downstream were much larger than that of upstream. Human activities, especially the increase of vegetation cover and construction of large and medium-sized reservoirs, provided a significantly greater contribution to the reduction of sediment discharge than did precipitation changes. As a case study of river evolution under global change environment, this study could provide scientific basis for the control of soil erosion and the management of water resources in Ganjiang River, as well as for the related research of Poyang Lake and the Yangtze River basin of China
